"Don't panic" (Neil Gaiman).
Here, we try to describe torque converter damages in simple terms. Most damages are fixed or repaired for relatively little money.
Damages may be internal and external.
Internal damages:
Worn clutches and wearing parts: these are not considered as damages in general, but shall be described. Everything in this world is subject to entropy, and no one has repealed the laws of physics. If there is a friction, sooner or later it will lead to wear. If the problem is not neglected, clutches, steel discs and wearing parts (gaskets, rings and glands) may be replaced for relatively little money. It is important to use high-quality components. We use SONNAX components.
When appears: in the ballpark of 200,000 km. Although sometimes the donut goes much longer.
We've heard rumors of a fault-free donut with 500,000 km.
Physical damages: damages to piston, reactor, pump and turbine wheels, mirrors, breakdown of freewheel (overrunning clutch), destruction of bearings, etc. These damages may be repairable and non-repairable. If a damage is non-repairable, you can always use purchased parts or take them from a donor car.
When appears: suddenly.
External damages:
Physical damages: hub, projection, threaded rivet nuts, body.
We can repair all damages, except for significant damage to the body. The damaged hub is replaced with a new one, the projection is also first welded and then machined on a lathe.
When appears: suddenly.
